Honouring Diversity Activity (K-3)
The objective for this activity is to have students put themselves in the shoes of someone who has a speech or language disorder. Students would start by watching the first video on the right entitled "Stuttering: For Kids, By Kids". The teacher would then explain that stuttering is one of many speech or language disorders that some students have to deal with.
After the video is complete, the teacher would ask a variety of questions to the class that would help students realize what it may feel like to have a speech or language disorder. Students would raise their hands to indicate if any of the questions apply to them, or to give a response. Questions such as: 1) Has anyone here ever been made fun of before? 2) How did it make you feel when you were made fun of? 3) How would you feel if it was really hard to talk to people? 4) Would you want to do a lot of talking if you were worried you'd get made fun of every time you talked? 5) Just because someone has trouble talking, does that mean they know less than someone who doesn't have trouble talking? 6) Should students be made fun of because they learn or talk differently than you? 7) Has anyone here known someone who had a little trouble talking or learning? To conclude the activity, the class would then watch the second video entitled "What Are Learning Disabilities?". This video explains what a learning disability is in kid-friendly language.
